Full body techsuits are making their way into other aquatic sports leaving traditional competition wear behind
Though FINA disqualified techsuits from swim competitions the technology is finding it's way into several aquatic sports at large. Slip Ins is a swimwear company that taken the techsuit and adapted to to surfing, paddle boarding, pool swimming and yoga.
When I was racing in a TYR Tracer Lighttechsuit the material composition was 70/30 Nylon-Lycra, Slipins are 82/18 suggesting they may even be more hydrophobic and faster than the TYR Tracer Light was....
God, I miss that suit. It's a shame that FINA is not as evolved as the marketplace and refuses to acknowledge that techsuits provide protection, speed and comfort.
Slip Ins are amazingly affordable when you compare what we were paying for techsuits. I was spending between $250 and $500 each (I use to wear Blueseventy and TYR Tracers) but prices for Slip Ins sell for: $75 -$150. From the Slip Ins press release: "...Slip Ins were born in the heart of the surfing and exercise mecca of Southern California. and make you feel beautiful and fabulous when joining in life’s adventures. Choose from many brightly colored, sensuously soft styles designed for active, fun lifestyles. Full- and short-size SurfSkins, DiveSkins and SurfSkin Minis are the best body-fitting suits for getting in and out of wetsuits easier whether surfing, paddle boarding or scuba diving. Slip Ins feel luxurious and come with lots of benefits [most notably] "...Protects against sun-baking with a 60+ SPF rating ..."
Wake-up FINA and embrace speed, comfort and cancer prevention.

In the February Edition of Yoga Digest
How many swimsuits do you own that look great but perform terribly when you actually want to swim, canoe, paddleboard, or water ski? I'm going to guess all of them.
And if you're a mom, just try to wear a cute swimsuit without one of your children pulling down the top, accidentally untying the bottoms, or otherwise revealing more than you intended!
I was downright frustrated and for the last few years, I wore board shorts and a rash guard every time I did anything in the water. It was the only way to have freedom of movement and assurance that all my swim parts would stay on!
Well, I think I can put my rash guards away...
I was given the chance to try out a new line of swimwear products - SlipIns SurfSkins. A line of swimwear dedicated to active outdoor water activities.
Slipins can be worn under a wet suit - and make putting that wet suit on so much easier (Have you tried putting on a wet suit?? Yowza!!)
They can be worn while surfing, swimming, diving, skiing, you name it.
They even have suits for yoga, pilates, and other exercise. Tell me you wouldn't want to exercise without worrying about your shirt flying up, your breasts popping out, or your pants rolling down!
But back to the swimwear. I had the chance to try out this zippered mini surfskin:
I was a little scared to order swimwear online because getting a perfect fit is somewhat challenging, but I ordered according to their size chart and the fit was right on.
Before I tell you about the SurfSkin, let me share one other fear.
See the front of this model"s swimsuit? That's the way all of the slipins are presented on their website. With cleavage. I was worried that I would be showing a lot of cleavage when I wore this suit, but.... the zipper goes all the way up. Or all the way down. Or however you want!
And somehow it is a non falling zipper. If you put it in the center, it pretty much stays in the center, even with a lot of jumping around. I went crazy - moving around, swinging my arms, jumping, twisting and that zipper did not move!
Phew! I was worried the suit would show more than I wanted to show.
The suit itself fits great and is a much thicker fabric than the usual swimsuit. It almost feels like it offers support in a spanx kind of way. Maybe it does or maybe it just seems like it does. I'm not sure, but I wasn't worried about sagging or any other issues that come up with swimwear that does not have support sewn in.
It also has long sleeves - which I love! The sleeves have the little thumb hole at the ends - also love! And it's spf 60+ so no worries about hanging outdoors and getting burned.
The only downside....I tried this baby on just a few days ago...in late fall. In the cold north, we don't do water sports in the fall, winter, or spring, so....let's just say I am more motivated to hit the elliptical after the experience.
And I'm motivated to book a trip somewhere I can learn to surf. Wearing the surfskin just makes you want to move, want to get out there, want to get in the water.
You can check out all the SlipIns at their website.http://slipins.com

There's a quiet movement that's been brewing in women's surfing recently.
Thanks to the example set by water-women like Leah Dawson, women's surfing is slowly evolving into a new animal. Gradually, it is becoming more about function, beauty and fun instead of sex appeal. The SlipIns Company is pushing the limits of the new frontier to the extreme.
This isn't a swimsuit. Nor is it a wetsuit. It is a fun, functional piece of water wear. It's not slutty. Nor is it going to fall off. What it will do is flatter your figure and make you stand out – WAY out – in a lineup.
Ladies, allow me to introduce you to Slip-Ins Surfskins:
SlipIns came to life in 2013 thanks to a struggle we are all familiar with: getting in and out of a wetsuit. Southern California native Robin Chesnie had enough of it. She originally invented SlipIns to make the in-and-out process easier.
To be completely honest, I probably won't use my SlipIns suit for this purpose. Most of their riders won't either. They're too good entirely on their own. Plus, how could you possibly hide funky prints like these under 3mm of black neoprene?
The Surfskins Mini style has the perfect long-arms/no-legs cut. I personally find this cut to be the most flattering and functional for surfing in their line. With SPF 60+, SlipIns is a great way to prevent your back from getting repeatedly fried when you loose track of time in the water as well.

Their size chart can be found here. As a reference, I'm 5'0 about 114lbs and the XS fits me perfectly. These suits stretch quite a bit though, so order down if you fall between sizes. Be sure to check out their dry-land GymSkins as well.
Let's make wardrobe malfunctions a thing of the past. Let's not sacrifice style for function. Let's be as bold in our attire as we are in our endeavors. Let's not stifle our spunk in that which is boring. It's time to start paying more attention to the sheer beauty of what we do in the ocean instead of worrying about our swim suits falling off.

Travel Gear and Apparel I Love
One of the perks of my job as a travel writer is that I’m sent travel gear and apparel to review. Some of it is crap and some travel gear and apparel I love. I won’t waste your time reviewing the losers. Curious to learn more? Let’s dive in.
SlipIns gymskins because bold is beautiful
SlipIns is yet another company I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Robin Chesnie is the co-owner of this Southern California-based company. Not a fan of cold water, Robin developed SurfSkins to easily slip in and out of wetsuits. An avid gym rat, she also came up with the gymskins idea. As a swimmer and someone who has experienced skin cancer, I wear my gymskins in the pool during deep water aerobics and I wore them kayaking in Mexico. The 60+ SPF rating is a life saver to my fair Norwegian skin and their bold designs make them fun to wear outdoors. The company also makes minis, leggings and sand pants. I’m wearing the Aquarious Symmetry GymSkin ($148) on Punta Coyote beach in Baja California Sur, Loreto in the above picture.

Summer Travel Gear and Apparel Reviews
I first learned about SlipIns SurfSkins & GymSkins during a visit to Conejo Valley, California. A friend’s mom had invented a waterproof unitard that was designed to be worn under wetsuits, thus the ability to “slip in” and serve as a second skin between the body and the wetsuit. I thought this was a clever idea, but not being a surfer, I wondered how this travel apparel would work for an active adventure baby boomer.
I have mentioned previously that I participate in daily deep water aerobics classes. In Northern California where I live, this is a year round exercise class held in an outdoor pool. Granted, we don’t swim surrounded in snow, but sometimes the water is not so warm. I’ve been wearing my “GymSkin” to class for the added layer of warmth that it provides and the skin offers 60+ spf protection, a big topic of conversation for theskin cancer conscious traveler.
If you don’t feel comfortable wearing the gymskin to anywhere besides the gym or yoga class, you can always pair it with a loose tank top over it, or wear it with a cute little skirt. I wear my GymSkin to the pool for the added spf protection. The gymskin in Blue Feather retails for $130 on their website. In the picture below, I’m wearing the gymskin in the Blue Feather color to match my TUSA Diving Mask. This diving mask, utilizing my glasses prescription, was made by Goggles n More.
If you can’t read this, you might need TUSA Prescription Diving Mask from Goggles n More
The TUSA M28 diving mask with single vision Rx lenses fitted takes about 3-5 weeks production time as both lenses and mask come from Europe. If you know that you need prescription glasses for your diving or snorkeling vacation, I recommend you get this dive mask. The company also makes custom-tailored lenses to match wearer’s prescription swim goggles for adults, babies & toddlers, as well as prescription sport glasses and sunglasses and skiing and snowboarding active eyewear.
The TUSA M28 Geminus prescription diving mask, in blue, retails for $65. check the website for current pricing.
